Thermo Scientific TSX and TSG pharmacy refrigerator error codes

Thermo Scientific's TSX (high-performance pharmacy and laboratory) and TSG (general-purpose) lines are the second-most-common purpose-built pharmacy refrigerators in Tampa Bay clinical settings, especially at hospital research pharmacies and at biorepository-adjacent compounding operations. The controller error codes are reasonably well-documented but easy to misread in the field. Here is the working reference.

Section 01

TSX vs TSG — what you actually have in front of you

TSX is Thermo's high-performance line — designed for tight uniformity, extended monitoring, and lab use. TSG is the general-purpose line for clinical pharmacy and outpatient settings. The controllers are similar but not identical; service procedures differ. The model number is on the data plate inside the door — TSX-505SA, TSG-1505VA, etc. Always confirm the model before applying any error-code reference.

Section 02

Code "Pb1" / "Pb2" — probe failures

Pb1 is the control probe; Pb2 is the secondary or monitoring probe. The unit reverts to control on the surviving probe and runs a high-temp pseudo-alarm. Field response: inspect probe-cable continuity, replace the probe ($150–250 in parts), recalibrate. If both probes fail simultaneously, suspect the controller, not the probes.

Section 03

Code "dF" or "dEF" — defrost issue

The unit cannot complete a defrost cycle within the expected window. Causes: defrost heater failure, drain blockage, termination thermostat stuck. Service: continuity-test the defrost heater, clear the drain pan and tube, replace the termination thermostat if its contacts are open at room temperature. Common at year 7+ on heavily-used cabinets.

Section 04

Code "dr" — door fault

Door switch failure or door not fully closing for more than the alarm-delay period. Field response: verify the magnetic switch on the cabinet frame engages with the door magnet (replace switch if not), check hinge alignment, replace gasket if compressed.

Section 05

Code "Hi" / "Lo" — temperature alarms

Same diagnostic as on any pharmacy refrigerator (see the alarm troubleshooting article). Hi alarm with all other codes clean: door, ambient, condenser, charge, in that order. Lo alarm with all other codes clean: probe placement, controller setpoint, evap solenoid stuck open.

Section 06

Code "Pwr" or power-loss alarm

Restored from a power outage with the controller battery still alarming. Acknowledge, document, and verify temperature recovery on the data log.

Section 07

Smart-Vue Pro and TSX continuous monitoring

Newer TSX models ship with the Smart-Vue Pro module integrated; TSG units typically rely on external monitoring. Smart-Vue Pro cellular alerting requires a Thermo subscription. Many Tampa Bay customers run Smart-Vue Pro for the data integrity (FDA 21 CFR Part 11 audit trail) and ColdSentry™ in parallel for the redundancy and the lower-cost SMS path.

Section 08

Common service items by year

Year 3–5: probe replacement, gasket. Year 5–8: defrost heater, door switch, hinges. Year 8–12: controller battery, condenser fan motor. Year 10+: compressor — at which point the repair-vs-replace decision applies. New TSG-1505VA pricing in Tampa Bay runs roughly $5,200–6,800; new TSX-1205SA runs $7,500–9,500.

Operator FAQ

Quick answers

How are TSX error codes documented?

In the unit-specific user manual (downloadable from Thermo) and in the on-screen help on the touchscreen models. Older screen-based units have a code reference label on the door interior.

Can I clear a Thermo error code by power-cycling the unit?

Often the code clears on power cycle but the underlying fault remains. Always pull the alarm history before clearing, and never clear without documenting in the temperature log.

Are TSX and TSG units validated out of the box?

Validated to factory uniformity spec, not to the customer's installation environment. Site-specific mapping is still required for USP <797> and most clinical-research applications.

Does Thermo offer Florida service?

Yes through authorized partners. For non-warranty work, local commercial refrigeration with pharmacy experience is typically faster.

Is Smart-Vue Pro required for VFC compliance?

No — any digital data logger with NIST-traceable calibration and 30-min logging frequency satisfies VFC. Smart-Vue Pro is one option among several.
