Why your commercial compressor is short-cycling

Short-cycling kills compressors. Here are the six causes, in order of frequency, and how to diagnose them.

Section 01

1. Low refrigerant charge

Suction pressure hits the low-pressure cutout, unit cycles off, pressure equalizes, cycle repeats.

Section 02

2. Dirty condenser coil

Head pressure rises, high-pressure switch trips. Usually dust, lint, or Tampa Bay grease film.

Section 03

3. Failing start capacitor

Motor cannot pull to run speed, thermal overload trips. Listen for the hum-click-hum pattern.

Section 04

4. Undersized or oversized unit

Original sizing error. Short-cycling is constant regardless of load.

Section 05

5. Thermostat differential set too tight

A 1°F differential causes rapid cycling. Open to 3–4°F.

Section 06

6. Liquid line restriction

Partially blocked filter-drier or TXV. Read superheat to confirm.
